Imagine you draw a diagram showing an arrow representing light passing from air into water. When light moves from air into water, it slows down and bends. This bending is called refraction. In the drawing, you can show a straight line of light, and as it hits the surface of the water, the line suddenly changes direction, forming a bend. This explains why objects under water appear closer to the surface than they really are.
